Since landing on Mars in February 2021, NASA's Ingenuity helicopter—technically a rotorcraft—has taken dozens of short airborne excursions throughout the planet, but its most recent trip established a record for the diminutive craft. According to its flight log, which was released by NASA on December 21, Ingenuity's 69th trip was also its farthest. In less than 135 seconds, the four-pound, 19-inch-tall helicopter covered around 2,315 feet at a speed of nearly 22.5 mph, surpassing its previous record of about 2,310 feet, which was reached in April 2022.

Ingenuity's Impressive Flight Journey

Even if Ingenuity's most recent flight was already spectacular, the journey went even more smoothly than anticipated. NASA's Flight 69 preview record states that the organization calculated the helicopter's flight path to be 2,304 feet over 131 seconds.

Thus far, Ingenuity has flown about 10.5 miles across the surface at elevations as high as nearly 80 feet in 125.5 minutes. The chopper is moving along, taking pictures of the ground below it to relay back to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) team in California, which is in charge of the program. According to Digital Trends, NASA engineers have so far used visual tools to help them map out effective, secure routes for the project's Perseverance Rover. Even without accounting for its most recent achievements, ingenuity has long outlived its initial projections. When the aircraft was first launched back in 2021, NASA didn't plan on using it as a key part of the Perseverance mission; instead, they planned it to just last for five flights to evaluate avionic capabilities in the thin Martian air, which makes up only 1% of Earth's atmosphere.

But not everything has gone smoothly for Ingenuity. The helicopter stayed dark for a short while in May 2022 due to a seasonal rise in atmospheric dust that prevented its solar arrays from fully charging.
